What does Reggio Calabria bergamot have to do with wine and wine producers at Vinitaly? The “fruit that gives birth to fragrances” was a prestigious guest at one of Italy’s most important fairs. Protagonist, together with the Consortium of Calabria Igp oil, of delicacies cooked by chef Armando Codispoti. In particular, at the Sol&Agrifood stand, bergamot was used to prepare dishes offered to visitors and insiders during meetings and public gatherings. Not only the fruit but also the essence; not only the “sight” but also the palate. Fully satisfied, of course, President Ezio Pizzi and the consortium members for the important contribution made, as well as the cooperation between the parties.
Institutions and consortia, producers and entrepreneurs, politicians and ordinary consumers were able to fully appreciate the wonderful citrus fruit.
The minimum production capacity of bergamot essence is around 10,000 kg/year. In addition to the highly prized essence, which is used in the perfume industry, and to a small extent pharmaceutical and cosmetic, the companies also produce, on a completely artisanal basis, liqueurs and other derivatives such as juices, jams or sweets. Clear air and favorable climate, characteristics that make the flavors and scent of bergamot inimitable in other places, have fully convinced everyone.
Last but not least, as repeatedly mentioned, bergamot is produced almost exclusively in the coastal strip of a part of the province of Reggio Calabria (extreme south of the Italian peninsula), as identified in the European Community decree establishing the PDO with regard to the essential oil.
But the news is that in recent years fruitful work has been going on for the extension of the PDO to the fruit, and it certainly seems to have reached the conclusion of the process.
